"Build it up West Virginia" has arrived to volunteer there help at the

Whipple Company Store & Museum. This group of young adults are working hard unloading,unpacking,and unraveling a massive amount of goods,stuff,junk,worthy and un-worthy artifacts contained within the basement walls of the 1890 company store. This is a project that would not have been possible this year had it not been for the dedication of these hard working adults. They come with all the energy to work hard and work hard they do. They camp on site, plan and cook there own meals, clean up after themselves and entertain us with educated conversation, music and laughter. It restores your faith in our future generation of young people . They have accomplished so much in just 2 days. This group is wonderful.

April 12,13,14,15, and 16th Archaeology Schedule

Task: Surveying the Whipple Property and producing a topographic map Description: This part of the archaeological research will consist of a topographic survey using state-of-the-art surveying devices. Each day will begin with a workshop on the fundamentals of topographic survey, and then hands-on-learning through participation in the survey. The final afternoon or evening will be spent creating the topographic map in computer software, and so volunteers will be learning the full process in topographic survey, from collection of field data to the production of maps.

It has been a great couple of days. We have been clearing and marking the ground. Matthew decided that it would be a great way to spend his birthday, so he brought a few friends out to learn about preservation and artifacts. Brandon worked with the Kids for several hours and they were permitted and taught the proper way to use the equipment brought in from UCLA Berkeley. Today Brandon,Sarah, and Kenny worked on the topographic mapping portion of the research. Although it was a bit over cast and at times some rain they managed quite nicely to get some of the measuring and mapping started. The brush that has been cleaned away from the mapping and dig site will be hauled away on Friday.. Anyone wishing some free wood can pick it up before then. The ground work is almost ready to begin the hunt and find... This is exciting and ya'll are most welcome to come along and participate. Enjoy the pics and i'll be back tomorrow with more updates.. Day 3: Getting off to a late start. The clearing hasn't been completed as of yet and the weather was not our friend this morning.. The day did turn out to be a good one and we managed to get some work done.. Our Archaeologist explain some of the equiptment to us. We started on setting markers and mapping out the ground. Although some clearing is still left to do and the brush is still being hauled off it has been fun to start on some different aspects of this project.

FYI: We learned today why some folks spell the word differently.

Dear all,

We had another good day at the Whipple Store, it was very productive and we made a lot of headway in clearing the area we will be surveying.

A little bit more needs done, and so we will be doing some of that in the morning.

In the afternoon, we will be starting the topographic survey. Tomorrow's activity will consist of laying in the fundamental elements for the topographic survey.

For those of you interested in surveying, this will provide a basic understanding of the principles of survey work. We will be using a high tech layer surveying device that I got from Berkeley, it is top of the line so it should be a great opportunity to learn a valuable skill (i.e - we will be shooting lasers, much fun to be had). Lunch will be provided. If it is raining, we can still do some of the work in the morning. In the afternoon, we can have an archaeological instruction session in the Whipple Store and do some of the survey work.

Archeology Dig at the Whipple Store

I am pleased to announce an archeological survey the entire month of April right here at WCS&M (Whipple Company Store and Museum.) The research will involve scholars from UC Berkeley, Stanford, Appalachian State University, Marshall University and other colleges both nationally and locally. This research project is designed to involve community members, from school kids to retirees, in a major research project.

We invite all those who are interested in archeology, West Virginia history, coal miners’ heritage and other aspects of our culture to join in the dig! This especially is a chance for school-age children, high-school students, and university students from the area to participate in a major research in order to further their educational journeys. We will be using cutting-edge equipment from both Berkeley and the Smithsonian Museum, so local communities will have the opportunity to gain valuable technical skills, research experience, and to work with nationally prominent scholars.

The fun begins April 5th, and will run through the first week of May. This work is the first part of a larger project, and will involve survey work and some limited excavation (large-scale excavation will occur in a second phase planned for a later date). There are a number of different tasks we will be undertaking at various points in the project, and so a schedule and description of tasks is given below. Each day’s maximum participants is 20 people, so sign up today! Task: Preparation and Basic Introduction to Archeology Description: During these three days, volunteers will be preparing the site for the archaeological survey, including clearing some areas of brush. A workshop on the fundamentals of archeology will be given each day before work begins (8:00-9:00), in addition to informal discussions throughout the day.

Task: Controlled Surface Collection (CSC) Description: Volunteers coming for this part will learn a skill set that is fundamental to archaeological research -- controlled surface collection. This involves using metal detecting equipment to walk along controlled lines on the property, and marking (but not excavating) any detection. Each point will be recorded with the surveying equipment, and at the end all points that are picked up during the CSC will be plotted on a map, and that map will be overlaid with the topographic map made in the previous part. Volunteers will be introduced to the basics of fieldwork, surveying, map-making, and spatial analysis.

Task: Non-Intrusive Testing (Geo-physical Survey) Description: This part of the survey will consist of using highly sensitive equipment to test for subsurface features at the Whipple Site. Volunteers will gain experience using an Electrical Resistivity machine on loan from UC Berkeley, and a Ground Penetrating Radar from the Smithsonian. The first machine uses electrical currents sent through the ground to test for any anomalies in the ground. The second machine uses radar to also look for anomalies as a back-up for the ER machine. Volunteers will gain experience operating this equipment under the supervision of professional archaeologists. The data collected will be digitized, and a map will be made of the findings to be overlaid with maps made in previous parts, and so volunteers will gain experience in the whole process of geo-physical testing.

Task: Intrusive Testing/ Limited Excavation Description: The final part of this survey will consist of limited excavation in order to do gain basic knowledge of the Whipple site and its underlying stratigraphic layers. Volunteers will learn the basics of archaeological excavation including an introduction to excavation techniques, recovery of artifacts, and the fundamental mechanisms of recording an archaeological site. In other words, this is the part where you get your hands dirty!!

So, it got me to thinking, what made this man think I was a coal mining museum? Why would he think that moving "stuff" would make me anything different than what I am..

BRR.. its a bit chilly and my bones are already starting to feel the winter creeping in.
I was watching as my people were closing up for another season, gazing on as the work begins. Place all photos away safely , inventory the gift shop and store the items in a dust free place. Then make sure all exhibits on loan are secured and safely stored. Its only 5 months until they open for 2011 and everything becomes full of life once more, but they are careful to place all items in the safest place, even for a short time. Then moves in the caretaker.
We had a great season and alot of people learned about me and asked lots of questions.. More folks came to share their stories and tell about there experiences concerning coal camp life. I had a wonderful time.

Today I had a thought and asked myself :

"Why do we preserve history?"

What do we hope to gain? whats the need for it? I would love to hear others thoughts on this.

I'll get back to this soon, I sure have alot of thoughts to share.

Lots of important folks came to visit me on Tuesday. I suppose they are trying to figure out a good way to save my bones. The people that take care of me have a lot of work to do. They need to try to forget about what I am and move me into the future of what I can be. I over heard the "important" people talking about all my space and what could be done in these spaces. They had alot of good ideas but means big changes for me. I reckon i'm a bit nervous. I believe these good folks have my best interest at heart, but I ain't to sure I'm up for the challenge of changing who I am to what they think I can be. Of course a new roof would mean I'd be a bit dryer . A purty coat of white paint would make me look happier. I think these ideas are all good, but a bit scary. I am expecting a group of students from a university to come out soon and inspect my roof and assess all my damaged parts. I am lookin forward to them finding all the things that need fixin when a building is 121 yrs old. Well, I sure could use some suggestions on what ya'll think should happen here. I sure plan on stayin around awhile. I'll keep you updated..

Howdy, its me Whipple... It has been a great day. So many people are visiting. I am having a fun time. I overheard several people ask my owners how was I named??? What is some of the family lines from me to them? Well since my owner misplaced her camera and is still frantically looking for it(no photos) I though today would be a good day to tell you a little about my name...

I was originally named Whipple Colliery Company.( Colliery meaning all things Coal.) however with this little unincorporated town of whipple some people ask what came first... I was named for the family of my original Owner Justus and Lucy Collins. Fannie Whipple was Lucy's mother. and so we start... Fannie's line is related to Matthew Whipple who was granted the land in Ipswich Hamlet in 1638 now known as Hamilton, Ma. His son was Joseph Whipple who had a son Mathew Whipple who's son was William Whipple (approx 1800) had son Joseph Whipple married Almira Stevens, Richmond VT. They had a daughter Fannie Almira Whipple.(1820-1875). Fannie Married John Horry Dent ( long famous history) they had a daughter Lucy Whipple Dent who married Justus Collins who had a daughter Amy Whipple Collins (3/18/1897-7/26/1967) Amy and Richard had one daughter named Lucy 10/28/1926 never married, no children. thus our direct line to Matthew ends.
So there you have a bit of my background.. But WHY you might ask is the store named for these people......Well stay logged in for my next blog story.....For now, see ya in the funny papers

Whipple here.. How has everybody been? I am having the best time with the people visiting me and wandering through old memories and history. I had a young visitor the other day asking the tour guide some questions about the outside of me. So I got to thinking hmmmmmmmm ,
I do that alot because "old" means you have alot to think about. How about a seek and you find out game.. We used to play alot of games in the past. Games that used our eyes,ears,and physical movements, and most times our brains.

I have received another request for Whipple to return and speak about his memories and adventures here in the company store. I believe he will return to blogging real soon..

In the mean time let me tell you about our exciting History (Coal) Camp coming up on July 8th 2010.

We will be traveling back in time to 1893 and adventuring in the day of the West Virginia coal miner and his life with his family living in the coal camps.. Hands on is the best way to experience some of our most hidden history facts.. You will mine for coal, get paid in scrip learn how to shop on a limited food budget and make your own food fresh from the butcher shop.. lets go to school and learn readin ritin and rithmatic just like back then and don't forget the team games.. a warm July picnic and shopping in the company store for ice cream to make that most famous company store ice cream sundae.. Music was always part of a coal camp life so lets learn the special songs of the Appalachian mountains. crafting and gardening was also a favorite pastime but also alot of work at times.. Coal Camp Women in our wild and wonderful state of West Virginia were the Heart and Soul of the mining community. The challenges these women faced, and there ability to be both physically, and emotionally strong contributed greatly to the family's survival in the 1900's to the mid 1950's. Although the state of West Virginia will never forget the sacrifices the coal camp women made, The Whipple Company Store & Museum would like to pay tribute to these courageous women.
We will have a dedication ceremony on Friday May 21st 2010 to celebrate and honor these
woman who are the Heart or our Heritage.
Join us for this open house event at 11:00 am with a dedication ceremony at 12:00 noon.

I am looking through photos all the time to see what we have done, and what we are needing to do. I recently ran across this photo and thought it has got to be added to our tour.
The part of the building off to the left in this photo is where the butcher shop once was. It also was a restaurant for the previous owner in the early 90's. Fortunately, what you don't see is the flooding that occurred in this room from the roof leaking so bad. The floor has become soft, and the ceiling has fallen in. This is not a room that we have used on our tours, but will be working on this summer. If you would like to help with any of the restoration just let us know.

Now you may have noticed the big plane smack in the middle of the picture. We were donated this plane with its fascinating story when the
Scarbro Elementary school closed for good this past year.
( Scarbro School had been part of this coal mining community since the begining.)

The story was told to us this way: The plane was build by the students, with help from the faculty. They each placed a piece of paper mache on the plane till it was the correct size. This plane is suppose to be a replica of the first plane that flew under the completed new River Gorge Bridge. The original plane pulled a net behind it that caught the first jumper from the bridge. Does anyone know what year that was? who the first person was that jumped? or What kind of plane it was?

I was looking at the blogging tour and realized that some of the photos I am showing are taken shortly after we acquired the building. There is alot of clutter and disorganization about. From the front door of the company store as you enter the building this picture would have looked like the store in the early 30's. This counter would have been in the center front of the store and the gentleman in the right rear corner would have been standing about where the end of the counter is in tour 7 photo. On the back wall of this photo is where our post office was for the coal camp community of Whipple. If this picture appears small it is because it is a photo of the glen jean store. 4 stores were built in this fashion and Whipple was the largest. To date there has never been a located photo of the inside our our store. This of Glen jean is the best we got. But it is a very good likeness. and would have been similar in set up. This store burned in 34.
this was the second store built on the same site in Glen Jean. Collins also had one built in the coal camp town of Prudence and of course Whipple making this building structure 4 all together.

I have been away and our tour has fallen a bit behind.. Time to catch up. As you wander around the end of the counters shown in blog 6 you will find yourself in the front of the store looking back toward the post office. This is a view from the cash register.The clutter of stuff you see is remnants from days gone by when the store was once an antique and junque store. I do believe you could rummage through and find all kinds of treasures. If you can look to the right on the shelves you can see alot of glassware. Not much value in most of it, but we have had fun dating and selling most of it. We have had a couple yard sales to raise money for the roof. Which the building really needs. The counters right in front are 2 identical shelves like the ones closest to the freight room.. This wall of shelves held bottled items on them in the 20's and 30's. Photos and oral history accounts refer to lots of whiskey,and bourbon bottles. The white counter you see toward the left is an original counter. We have several of them, all wood and tongue and grove wood work. This shelf is sitting slightly in front of what used to be the butcher shop. The room we are in is round. Welcome back!

You are entering the company store from the freight room door behind you to the right in the photo. You will notice you are on the hard wood flooring, behind the counters. In front of the counter you would be a miners wife or child, perhaps a miner himself, standing on concrete flooring. The significance of this is shared on site during a tour. The white shelving to your right is all original. We have many photos and memorabilia to share from the late 1800's thru the 1950's. The counters to the left are not original to the company store, but are vintage and house alot of our donated items for viewing.

This one above contains the Bible of a family dated from 1889. Complete with names of coal camp families and there ancestors. The benches are in the the room because we are closed for the season and moved inside to protect from winter weather. They will be moved to the grounds after opening, for your relaxing pleasure. The benches themselves have there own story. The double doors is the entrance for the people in the coal camps. They would enter the store to do there daily shopping , pick up there mail, or just visit with one another and catch up on community events. Is that an original Company Store Clock?????

These are like items that our volunteers sort from other areas of the building and bring back to this location.. Lots of tools and misc. items to work on wood and metal.

Welcome back,

Although we are on day 4 on the 5th of the month, my site was down last evening. I will do a bit of catching up. We are going to visit the grain room next. This long narrow hall way room is around the elevator and through a swinging door. The walls are all metal. We had a young visitor a few years back introduce me to the walls being magnetic.

After passing through the concrete area you are now going to find yourself on the hard wood floors in which the workers would stand on. A definite distinction for the workers and the shoppers/miners. Woman were never allowed back here in the freight room area. Except for the children of the managers and workers, I haven't met anyone yet who was back here before the 30's. As the picture depicts this was a hand operated elevator that moved items from the basement to the 3rd floor. We still use this means of transport today. It makes things easier than hauling materials up the stairway. The rope was cut and taped when we acquired the building. It makes it unable to operate the elevator from the basement. It has to be worked from here and the 3rd floor ballroom. If you happen to know of anyone who wishes to donate a rope please have them contact me. We are in the market for one. Stay with us!

The freight room! This is the door you will enter off the front porch. As you tour through you will notice a great deal of water damage and neglect.

The displays are set up for hands on. When you are in the company store museum we do allow the handling of many of the items. Hands on history is so much easier to retain and so much more fun.

Day 1 of the 20 day tour.

Welcome to the 18,00 sq ft Whipple Company Store and Museum Blogging tour.

So lets begin.

Climbing the steps to the large porch is where we will begin. The concrete steps are actually the second set of stairs updated sometime after the 1930's. The original stairs were wooden and were a fan type staircase with no hand rails what so ever. You will walk under a very large archway that was built to symbolize the diftmouth opening of a coal mine back in the 1890's.

The window off to the right at the top of the stairs was a scrip window back when the building operated as a company store for both Justus Collins 1893, and then The New River Company in 1907.

The coal miner could collect his scrip, or credit his account from this window without ever having to enter the store. We are finding the Coal Miner was not real fond of shopping in the company store. However the women found it a gathering and social place, where they could exchange events of the day, school news and family happenings.

The center doors was the entrance. The large window to the left was a display and showcase window. Although the glass has been replaced from the original the window, The window box remains close to original condition. This is where the Christmas toys would be on display after Thanksgiving, and sale items and specials would be in the early years.

There is a door to the far left of the porch . That is where our tour will start into the building. We will be entering the freight room on the concrete floor which was the only place the coal miners could enter to purchase coal mining equipment. The rule was to walk only on concrete surfaces. I am not real certain how long this practice was enforced but do have documentation up into the early 30's. Woman however were not allowed to enter this portion of the building. The miners had a superstition about woman seeing coal mining equipment back in those days. so the freight room remained off limits to woman. The freight room gave the workers access to the basement, the hand operated elevator, the grain room and the butcher shop icebox, as well as a door leading into the main portion of the company store.

It is also stated and proven that a well written and thought out business plan is the best way to prevent failure. "Well thought out" being the operative words.
I am very proud to say that the Whipple Company Store & Appalachian Heritage Museum is embarking on its 4th Season . With all that's been positive and productive concerning the Building and Museum the time has come when we need to re-think our original business plan and look to revise it.
Our first 5 year plan was written primarily on one persons vision of future possabilities for this One of a Kind Icon. Along with management, workers, volunteers, helpers, and caring citizens spending days, nights, and many hours, working toward the goals as laid down in the business plan, it has come to our attention that the Museum Project is so much more than wood, windows and walls, and much more than we imagine.
Going through old photos these past few days, I found photos of our first visit to purchase the piece of real estate in 2006. Without looking at the photos I can't even recall what the building was like. only what I focused on it becoming.
Can you write down your future goals (Business Plan) and then make it happen? I think you can. The lessons you learn along the way will astound you.

1. Pray always for strength to use your God given Talents.
2. Keep your heart in all your doing.
3. Maintain your vision.
4. Don't be afraid to have small failures.
5. Be humble and thankful when you experience success.
6. Make your career work with your family life.
7. Contructive criticism is a precious gift.
8. Always allow those that want to help be part of your project.

....About 2 am I am awaken to footsteps in the ballroom. There is someone walking upstairs, outside the door where we are sleeping. Am I scared??? Yes, at this point I am scared. How did someone get in the building? How did they get up the stairs without me hearing them. ( the steps are very loud) And, what do they want? The dog is with us and he is not barking, but standing in the middle of the room making a low growl sound. The footsteps stop! It sounded as though the footsteps stopped near the elevator. I am afraid to open the door and look out, afraid NOT to open the door and look out. As I am pondering on what to do I hear the elevator start to move. The elevator is hand operated and it has to be pulled by a rope. Now you may think that gravity would cause the elevator to move on its own. A large truck perhaps could vibrate on old wooden building and make the elevator vibrate, however the elevator itself was on the first floor when I last checked the freight room. 10 minutes or so has passed and I'm watching the dog, he's not making a sound. If it was a person why would he not bark? After 20 minutes or so I hear nothing more, it is so quiet. I gently turn the door knob and peek out(I'm so brave)

I peer out toward the elevator and see nothing except the elevator. That is odd because old buildings do not vibrate things UP! The elevator was on the 3rd floor. I close the bedroom door

softly behind me, not to wake up my daughter, and walk very easy to the middle of the room stood and listened. I listen and hear nothing for about 1/2 an hour. I proceed to go down the steps to the office. My cell phone was in the office and I thought I could call someone to come over ( at 3:30 in the morning? what is wrong with me?) I'm sitting in the office at this point and listening so intently for any sound or movement, when all of a sudden.........

During the summer months of touring the company store I get ask many times a day is the building haunted? I suppose they are referring to spooks, ghost and sights unexplainable. I never quite know how to answer the questions, so I started opening up the building in October so that these folks could perhaps answer there own questions. I thought it would be fun to post some of the findings and stories. I will start with one of my own.

The company store is very big and is acoustically balanced in the round room. I expect to hear pops, creaks and moans, after all the wooden structure is over 100 yrs old, but there are many strange sounds that are heard from the company store. I myself have experienced male voices. Many of the noises talking, chatting, as if trying to settle something, almost argumentative. These voices occur at odd times and many times when I am in the company store alone.

I decided to spend the night at the store one evening after working late. It was to late to venture out and to travel 20 miles home. Some of my family was out of town and my daughter was settled into one of the rooms off the ballroom. I was in the office doing paperwork when I heard the freight room door slam shut. The door is on a spring and shuts hard making a loud unmistakable racket. However this door cannot open on its own or blow in the air or make a noise on its own. I assumed that my son had come to check on me and so I ventured down from my office to greet him. No One! I investigated the freight room door. It appeared fine and closed. I checked all the other outside doors and looked outside to see if there was a strong wind or maybe a traffic issue that would have created a vibration. I take hold of the fact that I am a realist, so I am looking for reasons the door would slam in such a manner. After spending a good bit of time checking everything I returned to my office and paperwork. Approx. 10 minutes go by I am involved in paperwork and the door slams again. Now I'm a bit UN-nerved. I know this is un- natural. I can't find a reason for the door to be slamming and no one is in the building. I went to the door and locked a chair back under the door knob and then joined my daughter upstairs in her room. I am a little uncomfortable at this point, and decide to retire in her room. About 2:15 a.m. I am awakened to ...to be continued...........

The store doesn't have much of a Christmas spirit this year. But we have been putting together a Christmas tree in Florida. My Husband of many many years has always worked the classic 8-10 hr job at day all our married life, and hasn't ever had the time to help put the tree up. Since taking on our new Job at the Whipple Company Store and Museum he has a different kind of 9-5 job commonly known to most as retired. Retirement is interesting because you realize you work harder than ever before, make less money than you can believe, all the time calling it fun.

Hi, Its me WHIPPLE.It seems a little lonely around here of late. Everybody is getting ready for the holidays and I am standing all closed up for the winter. How could my people leave me? This just can't be.

I can remember a time when my coal furnance would heat all my rooms right to my very bones. The children of the coal camp would come in after school to get warm and check out the latest Christmas toy. I can tell you the wish lists of those boys and girls were filled with hopes of a little red wagon or a new bike, even a shiny sled. I can still remember the smell of the new babydolls, doll houses, ball and baseball gloves and of course that new bat sitting in the big window on my porch. The colorful fabrics of red and green would fly off the shelves. Mommies would be making a holiday church dress, or a new shirt for the little ones to wear on Christmas day. It was a busy time indeed. The aroma of cinnamon and apples, oranges and cloves, homebakes cakes, and pies.

YUMMMMMMMMMM!

The traditional candy cane makes me smile and even chuckle a bit as I remember watching the children, and daddy's too, licking away at the red and white stripes. I could here the faint sound of carolers in the distance, as the beautiful voices would get closer I could hear the Christmas Carols being sung by the coal camp children and the sound was beautiful and festive. They would gather on my steps and some come up on my big porch to get out of the wind and sing almost as if they were there to just entertain me.
These are great memories I have of Christmas time. Well, I feel all warm inside and not so lonely anymore.

I think I can even hear the soft sound of Christmas carols faint in the distance....

The phone rings and its the Governor's office with a request. "This is Governor

Joe Manchin's office and he has expressed an interest in touring the Whipple Company Store and Museum. I realize you are closed for the season," says the Governors Advance, "but would anybody be there to take the Governor on a tour?"

I am trying to absorb the call that the Governor himself is interested enough in our project to visit and see what we are doing. "I will be happy to take him on a tour." My husband and I will come back to West Virginia from Florida and show him around.

Arrangements were made, travel was smooth going, and at 10:41 am on Dec 4th 2009 the Governor of West Virginia walked up the steps to enter the 120 year old, one of a kind, Whipple Company Store & Museum.

Good morning everybody.

Its a rainy sorta day. I always feel a bit sad when I see the rain a commin. Ya see, I don't have a good cover over my bones. My people are working to restore me and working hard and fast to get this roof of mine water tight. I'm a big guy, and it does take time.. So I try to be patient.

Yesterday the fireworks were popping and lighting up the sky all around me. Such a beautiful site.

I have had quite a number of visitors this week. Several have come to enjoy the coal mining experience. Some have come for tea(mmmmmmm I love tea time!) We have had several that just come to see me. I work hard to be on my best behavior when I have visitors. I try not to pop or creak to badly and I like to stand nice and tall so they can get a good picture.
My owners tell stories
about me and my life to the visitors taking the tour. I enjoy hearing about my past.

Well the world outside is starting to wake up, and the pigeons on my eaves are moving around to start there day. more later,

I am very proud of the way I am starting to look. My people are working everyday to make me weather tight and clean. Of course my roof is still leaking and my exterior walls have lots of problems. I'm not to pretty in the paint area as my paint in most places is original, and starting to flake. I'm not complaining mind you. I am starting to smell a bit better, and I feel great!Funny as that may sound, 119 years of musty coal dirt and pigeons in my tower start to smell a little bad, and wear and tear on the old bones.

I had some interesting people come through to look at me today and Joy, one of the people that care for me took them on a tour. She always tells tourist how happy she is with the way I am starting to shape up.
Today she was telling the folks from Kentucky what a special place I really am.. These folks were quite interested about the days of the coal miner and the old coal camp life. They asked a lot of question about my large arched porch and my elevator. The ballroom is always so much fun for people to see. I like folks to come up here on the 3rd floor for a couple reasons, I have a very unique structure that Joy tells people about, and the other reason its at the top of my structure and of course I can here the comments better!"GRIN". I'm pretty sure these Kentuckians liked me. They stayed a good while and visited all my little nooks and crannies. I was very pleased they had a good time.. I hope they come back soon.

We had a grand Gala here a couple weeks back. I enjoy parties and festive times here. Lots of people attended, and we had delicious food and lots to drink. A very nice man, Dave had brought his Glass Armonica..Now I must say that was most unique,and almost as original as I am.. It was very nice sounding and made my store space sound so special. Dave was very thoughtful about his musical instrument and allowed others at the gala to enjoy playing it. I had such a wonderful time listening to the people chat and wander through my rooms.. I did over hear that there are more parties planned.. I can't wait..

Spring is in the Air. YAY! I am looking real run down after the long cold winter. But I am going to be magnificent once again, as many people are looking at me and wanting me to be handsome.

My old bones have been creaking and I believe the water is running in my basement. I am potty trained, and have been for about 95 years so I can only think that a water pipe may have sprung a leak. It happens!

It is looking more and more like my owners are looking toward a black tin roof to place upon my head. WOW won't I look smart. Now you have to admit that it will be better to place a black tin roof on me to keep me safe for 50 more years, than a rolled roof that will have to be replaced every 8 years. I am preservations biggest fan, but I must admit those nails and hammers beating on me every day is getting to be a bit painful.
My people say they need more help to be able to afford the tin roof. Money is the factor. I can't understand what all the fuss is about. Everybody likes me, they can see how sad and sickly I'm becoming. People also are very generous, So I've decide to just ask everybody to help me out a little. I am old, but have many years left if I can keep the wind and rain from wearing me down. Won't you please help out a little by sending me a check or money order for any amount to,

Spring is in the air.. Although the weather around me is quite cool and a bit dreary, i know that the sun and the summer are right around the corner.. My people are coming to open my doors soon, May 1st to be exact, and I will be brimming with laughter, voices, children's smiles and people telling there coal related stories.. I love to hear the stories told by the people who once lived here and visited my place. Alot of people mention about the 'ol company store being the Walmart of yesterday. True, we did sell alot of things back in the coal camp days.. Can you name anything you can recall that would have been sold in the company store before 1954?

I can remember Bononmo Turkish Taffy. Funny it was neither turkish or taffy. But yummmmmmmmmmmmmm it was good! They no longer make that
"smack it" and "crack it "candy. It was a great invention by Victor Bonomo who past away at age 100 yrs in 1999. Recent update is that a new company has acquired the brand and is working to recreate the recipe . Perhaps I will once again hear the sound of the "smack" and the candy cracking into many little pieces to shared with one another.

Its been a beautiful day here in Florida where we are spending some winter days looking forward to our return to West Virginia the company store and museum. Plans are in the works to re-due the ceiling in the 3rd floor ballroom, and to inventory and clean the print room in the basement. Lots of events are scheduled for the store and museum. The gift shop will get some much needed inventory, as well as a tea room added. The museum has a quilt show challenge in the works and Our annual Gala is sure to be a Hit. Our Victory garden will be mapped out and planted. This should be alot of fun.

It has been cold here.BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!! One of the coldest winters I can remember. Back in my younger days I can recollect the 'ol coal furnace in my basement just going strong. The workin men would be busy all day and into the night keeping the furnace loaded with coal to keep my rooms nice and toasty warm. The smell of coal burning is one of my favorite aromas. it brings back a time when the families shopped here and the kids would come into the store laughing and playing hoping for a candy stick, or to see if a piece of mail would be in the post.
Times have changed since then. I no longer have my big beautiful coal furnace. The bricks have been taken down and are piled under the stairs leading to the basement . The chimney no longer graces the north side of my building ."sniff" the strong smell of the coal is but a faint memory.
I feel lonely in this cold weather... I am looking forward to when my owners open the doors again for the season, and this place gets jumpin with people and noise again. Spring is right around the corner.

Its February already and its been along time since I posted anything here.. a lot of good things are happening and I would like to share them with ya'll.

I was wondering if everyone is holding to those New Year resolutions.. Most people I over hear talking say they don't make them because they are to hard to keep..

Well I made a few for this year..

Number 1:No more feeling sorry for the pigeons. They are ruining my good looks, and making my roof looks all spotty. We know how they do that! So this year I have to find them a new place to live.

Number 2:I am going to post on my blog often to keep everyone aware of what is happening to me.. I have a lot of things going on inside my walls you won't want to miss.

Number 3:I want to share stories about my life and the way times have changed.....

Hey Hey, Whipple Here. Checking in to give you an update on how life is treatin me.

I am getting a good cleaning inside as well as out. My display cases are dusted almost dailey and I have been swept and mopped.. My outside decking was pressure washed just yesterday and Im getting a new finish on it. Woo-Weeee! I am going to shine like a new piece of scrip.

My people are talking about my siding alot lately. I guess I am looking a bit old and broken down. (sniff)

Something about when it rains I pour. So its time to get that face lift I guess. Let me show you how purty I used to be... Look at my nice white boards and my lovely black trim pieces.. I can remember back in my younger days I had some pretty good times.. hmmmmmmmmmm

The kids commin home from school would sit on my big front steps and eat ice cream. They sometimes would play games right outside my large windows and I could see them laughing and smiling. Some folks drove them fancy auto- mo- biles, and park them right in front of me. What sights they were to see. Yea, life was hard back then. But thay was good times. most times.

I can't wait to see me all white and black again. I am gonna look fan-tas-tic!

This is Ashlynn. She seems to know how this all works. I can remember long ago people turning a handle on the side of the phone and asking for Sarah to connect us to the houses. Ashlynn flipped open this new fangled plastic gadget and like some kind of magic could talk to someone...

Times they are a changin.. I hope she comes to visit again, maybe she can teach this

'ol building a few new tricks on one of those new phones too.

I have been having the greatest time. So many people have been coming to see me, and visit all my many rooms, and hear Chuck and Joy tell all about my many stories. I just love this part.!!!

This is Ben, He came a long way to take a ride on my hand operated elevator.. He is quite good with the elevator rope and the rope is very heavy. Ben and his sister Ashlynn, and of course their Mom and Dad, took a short tour of my structure. I am not quite sure how much they liked it, but I sure enjoyed having them visit me. I hope they come back soon.

Hi everybody,

I have been having so much fun. Chuck ,Tim and Ben have been giving me lots of attention lately. I have some nice new wood finishes, some drywall features, and lots of dust free corners.

The rooms in my basements are quite full of history pieces dating way back to the late 1800's and I have volunteers coming in on Thursdays to clean,and sort some of these things. My owner, Joy has set up a Volunteer Thursday for all those that love history and me " Whipple". If you ever want to spend time lending a little elbow grease stop by on Thursday. I would love to meet you.

I am starting to miss Victor. He is my right hand man when it comes to lifting the heavy parts of my structure. He takes good care of my freight elevator, and lots of big heavy items that need to moved about in my interior. He is on a work related trip and will return soon.

I will be glad to see him back.

I over heard my owners chatting and it looks like Charlotte, Chrissy, Holly and Becca are going to be cleaning the gift shop and setting up inventory. I have really cool things with my name on it... MY name is Everywhere!

I have had visitors this week from Michigan, Ohio,Delaware,Kansas,Virginia,and Kentucky just to name a few. I love meeting new people..and everyday I am feeling better...

The writing on the window above the front door reflects on the ceiling in the main part of the store..

Its amazing how the words on the ceiling are read correctly, not backwards.

As the sun sets throughout the day you can follow the reflection all the way around the circle.

Remembering all the pictures that people have taken of me over the years, It got me to thinkin.. My back side looks pretty detailed as well!! I did notice that I am in bad need of a face lift on this side.

I have lots of windows that allow me to see the old coal camp houses that stretch out behind me toward the Coal Mine of Whipple..

Ahem what great memories!

The people that came and went from those houses were tried and true Coal Mining families.
In the lower right corner you will notice my people are checking out a rather bad sewer pipe leak, and it looks like I am going to get all new pipes.. YaY!!
I also seem to have a lot of pigeon personalities perched on my upper roof..I don't think those birds have helped my image much. They make me quite dirty,and smell-ee!

We have had so many fun,exciting, and interesting, things happen with the Company Store this past 2007 summer... I'm excited about sharing some of these things with you.
We are also looking forward to our 2008 season which is coming up real soon. I look forward to keeping you posted on new and upcomming happenings here at Whipple.
